Pilipino Star Ngayon is under the Star Group of Publications founded by the late Betty Go-Belmonte. Today, the publication group’s Chief Executive Officer is Miguel Belmonte, the son of its founder.
It was launched on the 17th of May 1986 by Ms. Betty Go Belmonte, a close friend of Corazon Aquino as a symbol of the restoration of Philippine democracy most evident in the rebirth of press freedom after the Marcos regime. Its original name was “Ang Pilipino Ngayon”. By 1990, it was changed to “Pilipino Star Ngayon”, since it became a part of Star Group of Publications.
Star Group of Publications decided to circulate tabloid because they are easier to print, intended for the masses, and it is not bulky unlike the regular broadsheets. Though stories like “Lalaking Buntis” and “Dalagang Nanganak ng Dalag” are what one usually sees on its small sections –as it is customary to any tabloid paper around the world –it can also cover stories such as the installation of Corazon Aquino as the President of the Philippines.
Another tabloid under the Star Group of Publications is the PM or Pang-Masa. Contrasting PM to Pilipino Star Ngayon, PM deals with police stories while Pilipino Star Ngayon concentrates on political issues. In comparison, their readers are usually from the classes B, C, and D like students, vendors, and farmers. Their major competitors are Abante, Bulgar, and Remate.
The Editor-in-Chief of this Pilipino Star Ngayon is Mr. Alfonso Pedroche. He is the one who chooses the news and decides which of them would get the front page, what to put on the banner, etc. He also checks if the sources are credible, the facts are logical, and timely. Aside from him, there are also other editors who are divided according to their news sections. The section editors are: Ms. Rowena Del Prado for Metro Ngayon, Mr. Ronnie M. Halos for Opinion Ngayon, Ms. Jo Lising-Abelgas for Metro Ngayon, Mr. Mario D. Basco for Probinsya Ngayon, Ms. Salve V. Asis for Showbiz, Ms. Jojo P. Briones-Cruz for Libangan Ngayon, and Ms. Dina Marie Villena for Sports Ngayon. All of them layouts, type-sets, proofreads, and edits the news but their real main responsibility is deciding which news to print and how should they be placed on the paper. Pilipino Star Ngayon has no reporters rather; it has correspondents or contributors that are paid per column. They have fifteen columnists but they are “inorganic”. They contribute from time to time but are not officially working for the publication. Among their columnists are Korina Sanchez and Ben Tulfo.
All the news stories are due for editing by six in the evening. The contributors and columnists must start submitting their works by four to five in the afternoon. Submissions are done via email. Later at nine o’clock, their printing starts. They use a community printing machine, the Gothe. An average of thirty five thousand copies per hour is printed in their machine located inside their building. They usually just print one edition however, on special occasions when an important story is submitted, another edition for that day is printed.
Pilipino Star Ngayon originally measures 7 by 32 units. Later, they changed this measurement to 7 by 30 units. All the type-setting, proofreading, page layout, camera, etc are done electronically or with the use of computers. They still make use of the dummy but only for modeling purposes that involves advertising. Before, their major advertisers were cigarette products. However, it was banned. Now, their major advertisers include telecommunication companies such as Smart and Globe, and food supplements and SM. Full-page advertising on Pilipino Star Ngayon costs up to P50, 000.
