Editor-in-chief Danny Marquez

Danny Marquez currently holds the position of editor-in-chief. He is responsible for the overall command and management of the publication. He oversees all processes involved in production of the tabloid and approves which content will be included in the final product. He’s also the Sports Section Editor and is responsible for sports news and features. On the other hand, Ron Romulo, the Entertainment Section Editor, is in charge of entertainment news and features. However, they do not have any executive editors, managing editors or associate editors. They have fifteen to twenty full-time reporters assigned from different sectors and branches of the government and are paid a Grade 15 salary with benefits. They currently have 5 correspondents from different parts of the country. They have one from Baguio, General Santos and Iloilo and two from Subic. These correspondents are paid PhP 75 – PhP 200 per article published. However, submitted articles which are not published are not paid. They have six full-time columnists which are MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando, Jess Basco, Barr Samson. Jojo Perez, Jo Delector and Ed Verzola. Their guest editors are NCR mayors who usually write articles about their municipality concerns. Mayor Alfredo Lim of Manila writes for their Monday issues, Mayor Sonny Belmonte of Quezon City for Tuesdays, Mayor Recum Echiverri of Caloocan City for Wednesdays, Mayor Jojo Binay of Makati City for Thursdays and Mayor Marides Fernando of Marikina City for Fridays.

Editorial office of People's Balita

People’s Balita only publishes on weekdays and their circulation reaches about 121,215 copies daily. Most copies go to the NCR where 86,105 copies are circulated daily. Their provincial circulation reaches about 86,105 daily with most copies going to the Western Visayas Region (13,902), Central Luzon Region (12,808), Souther Luzon Region (11,272) and Souther Mindanao Region (10,710). However, they will add about 30,000 – 40,000 more copies if there’s a major news that they think would make people buy more newspapers. Ms. Villanueva wasn’t able to give as an estimate of sold and unsold copies daily but unsold copies or ‘returns’ are brought back to the publisher usually after about two days by the collectors. The publishing office then sells these returns to junk shops to make a profit out of it. They usually conduct surveys to determine the demographics of their readership. Their survey showed that 70% of their readers are females which they attribute to their fondness of showbiz news. Most of their readers come from the BC class comprising 30% and 35% of their readership respectively. Most of their readers are also from the 30-44 age group (36%) with college education (50%). Norberta Villanueva is the circulation manager and is in charge of overseeing all circulation processes and addressing circulation concerns.

The tabloid only has one daily edition. Articles are expected to be submitted at 4:00 pm usually through emails. Editing, proofreading and typesetting are done at 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. The final layout is expected to be ready before 9:00 pm so they can print they can finish printing by 10:00 pm. By 11:00 pm, the copies are then sent to different ports to be distributed around the country. Their office hours start at 1:00 pm and they’re open from Sunday to Friday.

Printing is done in the same location as editorials at the Atlas Publishing office. The size of the paper they use for People’s Balita is 10 1/8” x 12 ¼”. They still do typesetting and proofreading for faxed or written articles, and legal notices. Page layout is done electronically using PageMaker. They also use image editors like Adobe Photoshop in preparing the layouts. After finishing the layout, they would burn them and make negatives. Printing is usually done from 9-10 PM.

They use a rotary press which can do both web printing and sheet-fed printing. Web printing uses a roll and is usually done for newspapers and books. Sheet-fed printing uses sheeted paper and is comparatively smaller to roll paper. It is usually used in printing magazines. They have two rotary presses. The other one serves as a backup when they encounter technical difficulties like electrical problems. They also triplicate the plates for the different colors used in printing – cyan, magenta, and yellow. They can usually print 15,000 copies per hour for web printing and 5,000 copies per hour for sheet-fed printing. Mr. Francis Zulueta is the Production Manager of People’s Balita.
