A Report on the Manila Standard Today Newspaper Visit.
by: Enrique Arellano, Moujeck Cabales, and Diana Paguirigan

Last July 4, Friday, we visited the newspaper, Manila Standard Today. We were able to interview Mr. Alfonso Ma. U. Constantino, the Human Resources Manager of the said newspaper firm. Mr. Constantino was very cooperative to answer all our queries and he was able to give us a tour around their office and printing plant.

These are what we have gathered:

Manila Standard Today’s corporate name is Kamahalan Publishing Corporation (KPC). It is located at Leyland Building, Railroad corner 21st Streets, Port Area, 1018 Manila. Printing is also done in the same location. Their website is www.manilastandardtoday.com.

MST’s key editors are: Victor C. Agustin, the chairman of the editorial board, also acting as the editor in chief; Ramon L. Tomeldan, managing editor; and Ray S. EƱano, Chin Wong, and Cesar Barrioquinto, the associate editors.

The chairman of the editorial board handles the first page and has the prerogative of decision on what news to publish. The managing editor is an assistant editor, controlling the rest of the staff administratively. On the other hand, associate editors are the section editors who are in-charge of the different sections in the newspaper.

They have a total of 25 reporters; 17 on the central desk, 7 assigned on business and 1 for sports. They have 15 correspondents; 5 in Metro Manila and 10 located in different provinces. And they have about 29 regular correspondents; 8 for business, 5 for lifestyle, 1 for entertainment, 10 for opinion, and 5 for sports.

Mr. Constantino gave us a brief history of KPC. It was February 1987 when the Elizalde group inaugurated the publishing company known as Standard Publications, Inc., he stressed. Two years later, the Soriano group bought out the Elizalde Group which was then publishing ManilaStandard, it was re-named as Kagitingan Publications. In June 1991, the group of Ambassador Alfonso Yuchengco came in also as an investor. The publishing company was spun-off and was incorporated as Kamahalan Publishing Corporation, the publisher of ManilaStandard, a leading daily newspaper with nationwide circulation. In 1997, Enrique Razon bought the shares of the Yuchengcos. Rogelio C. Salazar is the current President and CEO of KPC.

The paper's circulation is confidential; and kept the number of copies printed and copies sold or returned undisclosed. The pass-on readership estimate is about 125,000, nationwide.

The paper only has one edition, which they do not remat. It has no Sunday paper. MST has three sections. First is the section A, consisting the top stories. It is usually the last section to be printed; its editorial deadline is 8 pm. Section B is all about business and its editorial deadline is 7 pm. Section C that is about lifestyle has an editorial deadline of 6 pm.

As said earlier, MST’s printing press is located the same as editorial. Its page measurement is 9x54, 9 columns by 54 centimeters. They do not typeset anymore for the reports are sent thru mail, but they still proofread. They use Pagemaker for the page layout. And they use the process of camera and stripping. Printing starts at 6pm for the Section C, 8pm for Section B, and 9:45pm for Section A. Their press type is GOSS, printing with the maximum of 20,000 copies per hour. The copies for Luzon are not delivered; they are being picked on the location at around 10pm for North Luzon and 11pm for South Luzon. The copies for Visayas and Mindanao are brought to PAL at around 2 in the morning.

Advertising rates for a full page display is Php 101, 574 and Php 58, 806 is for a full page classified. These are for both black and white prints, 209/ccm for display and 121/ccm for classified. 80% surcharge is added for color.

Kamahalan Publishing also prints tabloids like Tanod and Pinoy Parazzi.
